Denver, the Mile High City (so named due to its official elevation being 5280 feet above sea level), is the capital and largest city in Colorado. The city is located at the foot of the Southern Rocky Mountains in the South Platte River Valley.

Denver, which was founded during the Pikes Peak Gold Rush of 1858, became the territorial capital of the Colorado Territory in 1865 and the state's capital in 1876 when Colorado was admitted to the Union.

Denver has a semi-arid climate with four distinct seasons heavily influenced by the Rocky Mountains. The rainy season begins in mid-summer and can bring severe thunderstorms to the area. Winters are generally mild with unpredictable amounts of snowfall.
